IS Academy — Three Thousand Steps Toward the Sky

Savogno, in Val Chiavenna: the Lombard village where time stood still

The day begins before dawn. The alarm at 5.30. A good coffee, two pancakes and a glass of water. Tracksuit, hiking boots and rucksack on the back: we set off.

Destination Savogno, a hamlet in the municipality of Piuro, in the province of Sondrio, a stone's throw from Switzerland. The 6.20 regional train to Chiavenna, with a change at Colico, is perfectly on time. In just under two hours, the valley comes into view.

To ascend to Borgonuovo, those without their own transport must wait for bus 604. The stop sits at the foot of the mountains, opposite the Acquafraggia waterfalls, where the path begins. Ahead, only a stairway: to reach this unspoiled oasis there is but one way — nearly three thousand stone steps through the heart of the forest.
